Balos Lagoon is a natural wonder in western Crete, famous for its turquoise waters and unique landscape. With a rental car from Chania, the easiest way to start the day is to drive to the port of Kissamos, a pleasant route along the north coast. From there, boats leave for Balos and Gramvousa during the summer season.
The road access to Balos itself is a demanding dirt road of about 10 km, best suited to a 4x4. None of our cars is a 4x4, and damage to the underside of the car or to the tyres is not covered by either of our insurance options, so we recommend leaving the car at Kissamos and continuing by boat.
